Toor dal rasam recipe, how to make rasam with toor dal

Rasam is the south indian most popular soupy recipe, which is blend of spice powders and tamarind. There are many  veraities of rasam, of which I present toor dal rasam (rasam with toor dal). Here we add cooked toor dal, while preparing rasam,to enrich the rasam taste.

Rasam with toor dal is a healthy recipe and easy to make. It is the best remedy for cold or cough. Kids will love this soupy rasam, for this tangy taste.

Toor dal rasam goes well with rice, and perfect side dish for dal or vegetable fry recipes (like bhindi fry , aloo fry etc). Crunchy fried papads (vadiyalu) goes well with this rasam.

Rasam with toor dal

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. Cooked pegion peas (toor dal): half cup, paste
  2. Onion: half slice, finely chopped
  3. Tomato: half piece, finely chopped
  4. Turmeric powder: half table spoon
  5. Coriander powder: half table spoon
  6. Rasam powder: 1 table spoon (using everest rasam powder) (optional)
  7. Sugar: half table spoon
  8. Tamarind: lemon sized
  9. Coriander leaves: half cup, finely chopped
  10. Salt: as required
For tampering (tadka):
  1. Mustard seeds: half table spoon
  2. Cumin seeds: half table spoon
  3. Red chillies: 2, (whole)
  4. Curry leaves: few

Procedure:

  1. Heat heavy bottomed pan or sauce pan. Add one table spoon of oil, once becomes hot add finely chopped onions saute till pink. Add tomato picece and saute for half minute.
  2. Next add 3 cups of water, cooked toor dal paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder, sugar, salt, tamarind and coriander leaves, mix well. And increase the flame to high.
  3. Once boiling point is reached, reduce the flame to low and boil for 10 – 12 minutes. Then adjust salt and switch off the flame.
  4. Take tadka pan, heat one table spoon of oil in it(on low flame). Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, whole red chillies and curry leaves. Stir for half minute. Then pour this tadka to the rasam.

Toor dal rasam is ready to serve. Serve hot with rice.
