Tamarind rice, how to make tamarind rice

Tamarind rice recipe is the south indian popular rice recipe. Adding tampering (tadka) with peanuts, split bengal garm, mustered seeds, turmeric, curry leaves and tamarind juice to the rice will result this amazing rice recipe.

I am big fan of this yellowish and delicious  recipe. Once you taste this authentic tamarind rice recipe, I am sure you will also there in tamarind rice fans club.

This recipe tastes spicy and sour, with soft rice, in between crunchy nuts. Tamarind rice is prepared  as Prasad or navaidyam for God. And it is also best for lunch boxes, parties, or easy lunch/ dinner recipe on lazy weekends. You can prepare this recipe with leftover rice as well.

Ingredients:

  1. Cooked rice: 2 cups
  2. Green chillies: 5, half sliced
  3. Red chillies (whole): 3
  4. Peanuts: 1 table spoon
  5. Split bengal gram (Channa dal): 1.5 table spoon
  6. Split black gram (urud dal): 1 table spoon
  7. Ginger:  small pinch,  crushed
  8. Turmeric: half table spoon
  9. Hing (asofestoda): a pinch
  10. Tamarind : big lemon sized ball
  11. Mustard seeds: 1 table spoon
  12. Curry leaves: handful
  13. Salt: as required

Preparation:

  1. In a kadai, add 3 table spoons of oil. Once oil becomes hot add crushed ginger and peanuts then stir for half minute.
  2. Next add spilt bengal gram(Channa dal), mustard seeds and fry for half minute. Add urud daal, stir till they turn golden brown.
  3.  Now add green chillies and fry for half minute. Now add red chillies and a pinch of hing and then give a stir. Now add curry leaves and give  a stir. Add turmeric powder and salt, stir well.
  4. Finally add tamrind paste and cook till oil separates. Adjust salt.
  5. Now mix this paste into the cooked rice.

Delicious tamrind rice is ready to serve now.

Notes:

  • Make this tadka preparation on low flame, ingredients may burn quickly.
  •  Don’t make tamarind paste and tadka too thick. It doesn’t tastes good.
