Recipe for red coconut chutney- Chutney is a must side dish for most of the south Indian breakfasts. There are plenty of variety chutney recipes are available in the south Indian course. In those, red coconut chutney is one. As the name suggests it is red in color because we prepare it with red chilies. You can have this red coconut chutney with idly, dosa, rice or with any other south Indian breakfasts or even dhokla etc.

Red coconut chutney ( red thengai chutney/ kobbari chutney) takes very little time to prepare with handy ingredients. Just saute the ingredients and blend. that’s it. To give richness to the chutney give tadka/ tempering to it.

To make a south Indian red coconut chutney recipe, required ingredients are fresh coconut, red chilies, roasted chana dal, little tamarind pulp, and few curry leaves. I love the chutney with little tangy flavor. For this, I am using tamarind pulp here. You can skip it if you don’t like tanginess.

Ingredients
  • Coconut: 1 cup, fresh and finely chopped
  • Roasted chana dal: 2 tablespoon
  • Red chilies: 5
  • Tamarind Pulp: half teaspoon
  • Salt: as required
  • For tempering:
  • Garlic cloves; 3
  • Red chilies: 2
  • Cumin seeds: half teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds: half teaspoon
  • Curry leaves: few
Instructions
  1. Heat half teaspoon of oil in a pan, add red chilies and roasted chana dal, saute for half a minute.
  2. In a blender, blend sauteed red chilies, roasted chana dal, tamarind pulp, and salt. Next, add chopped coconut and blend (add little water if required). Adjust salt.
  3. Tempering for red coconut chutney recipe:
  4. Heat half tablespoon of oil in a pan, add garlic cloves and saute well. Next, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and red chilies saute well. Lastly, add curry leaves and mix well. Now pour this tadka into the chutney and mix well.
